Workshop: Sunday May 31st 3pm - Reimagining and Reusing with Ecodyeing (Hosted by The Only Animal & Farmers on 57th)

The Only Animal is proud to present an exploration of natural dyeing hosted by Farmers on 57th Society. We are very grateful to be able to use, reuse, and reimagine the beauty of plants within the lush green spaces at the farm in South Vancouver. By adding another step in the cycle of growth, decay, and composting we hope to imagine more ways to use the bountiful offers that the land provides us.

Led by Stevan Oostenbrug, we will review the basics of ecodyeing practices before gathering our own plant materials. The group will intentionally gather flowers, leaves, and cuttings that they would like to use from the carefully tended farm space. Some examples of materials on site are cornflower, marigold, carrot tops, st johns wort, and coreopsis. We will then bundle our fabric and plants and place them in a steam bath to extract the plants' pigments.

We grow veggies, flowers, and fruit using ecological growing methods and distribute it to over 1000 people every growing season. We currently operate a 1 acre urban farm, accessible community gardens and a therapeutic gardening program on a Vancouver Coastal Health site in Marpole, South Vancouver on the traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people.

The Only Animal (TOA) is a non-profit, interdisciplinary arts company whose mission is to bring art and artists to the heart of the climate crisis. Our current projects explore how place-based creativity can set the stage for climate care and sensitize relationships between people and place. We prioritize long-term and porous relationships with the public and our artist collaborators, shifting what we do in response to local curiosities and needs.
