sliding scale for event pricing: Green Bottle Method

As we walk the fine line of financial sustainability and providing access to all members of our community, we will sometimes offer events by sliding scale. The theory is, if you have more money, you voluntarily pay a higher price to attend an event. If you have less money, you don’t feel bad paying a lower amount for the same event. We know there is a risk of some people taking advantage of this system. But we hope most people will participate as it is intended. The Green Bottle method is one way to help guide each of us to where we fall on the sliding scale.

Quick Guide to the Sliding Scale

The highest price is the actual cost of the event. This is for those who have expendable income and paying for this event would not be considered a hardship at all.

The middle price is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little-to-no expendable income. Paying for this event may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship.

The lowest price is for those who struggle to meet basic needs and paying for this event would still be a significant hardship.

The Pay-It-Forward price is adding a donation above the actual cost of the event and that extra money goes towards supporting future free and low-cost events. Essentially it's an opportunity to not only enjoy an event, but also to support your fellow community members at the same time.

The Green Bottle method was developed by Alexis J. Cunningfolk and put in a visual way below:
