Reflections on Eating More Veggies – Summer Student Guest Post #2

Hello again! My name is Angeli and I am one of this year’s summer students at Farmers on 57th. As promised in my previous blog post, here are more reflections about personal benefits of eating more veggies through a CSA. Eating more veggies is healthy AND fun The updated Canada Food Guide was released earlier this year and it looks pretty different than the old rainbow model. I like the visual guide of half your plate being fruits and vegetables. It also reminds us to be mindful of our eating habits, cook more often, enjoy our food, eat meals with…

Reflections on Food and Ecology – Summer Student Guest Post

Hello! My name is Angeli and I am one of this year’s summer students at Farmers on 57th. I am in my 4th year of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I volunteered at Farmers on 57th in 2017 and 2018, and am currently doing my internship there as a farm assistant. In this blog post, I want to share some reflections on how Farmers on 57th is a great example of agroecology, and how we contribute to a more sustainable food system by reducing our fossil fuel footprint. I hope this is…

2019 Veggie & Flower Shares – Sign up now

Wowza! Time is just flying by. We have been in the field for 2 months now turning in our cover crops and seeding the season of eating’s crops. We eat all year of course, but eating straight from the garden, the food we’ve grown ourselves, the food we grow for our community? So delicious. So fresh. The season of eating! It’s been a whirlwind of a start, setting up a new farm site on the western lawns of George Pearson Centre. Last year, we had to move from our old farmsite of 9 years, to make way for the bulldozers.…

Tabouli

adapted from Mollie Katzen, Moosewood Cookbook This is one of my go to recipe’s for a cool summer salad. Aunt Linda requested we bring Tabouli Salad to the family reunion August long weekend. We obliged. Cool & light, yet filling. The citrus keeps it bright, the garlic, tomatoes & scallions make it so flavourful. We find Tabouli is even better after a day or two in the fridge. 1 cup dry bulgur wheat 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 tsp. salt 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil 2 medium cloves garlic black pepper, to taste 4 scallions,…

Are you ready for the veg? Taking stock: kitchen tools

The garden beds are seeded, irrigation is laid and bountiful Spring and Summer vegetables are on their way! I’ve been taking stock of the kitchen to be ready for the bounty. Here are my top five favorite tools to have on hand when the harvest box veggies and herbs start coming our way. The goal? To eat ALL the veg, reduce food waste & maximize what I’m getting out of the market garden.   1. Spatula This is hands down my favorite kitchen tool. I love the way the rubber wipes clean the sides of bowls, jugs, plates and food…

The Tarps are Down

As the redevelopment on the Pearson-Dogwood site begins to take shape, we farmers must relocate the market garden by the end of 2018. There are many phases of the redevelopment project, and the first phase builds where the existing market garden is currently located. The future permanent location of the farm will not be established for several years. So – we are building a transition farm! It will be tucked between Pearson residences and will deliver the same programs and same delicious organic veggies. There are many ways to build a farm where there is existing lawn. We decided we…

Pea Salad Soup Recipe & Cooking Demo by Brigitte Gemme

We had a wonderful cooking demonstration at the market garden Tuesday. Our very own CSA member, Brigitte Gemme of Smart Vegan Kitchen shared some recipes to help use up the greens in the weekly harvest box. She whipped up some samples under the Norway Maple tree and us lucky farmers & CSA members lapped them up! The all-things-green Pesto used blanched carrot tops, was super smooth and lemony from the purslane, and had chopped walnuts sprinkled atop to preserve the crunch. The Pea Salad Soup was delicious, and who knew you could cook salad greens? Super useful in what has been an…
